Tax Invoice

A tax invoice is an invoice that meets Australian GST rules and shows enough information for a taxable sale to be identified.

A tax invoice is used when a GST-registered business sells taxable goods or services. It tells the customer what was bought, who sold it, the price, and the GST included or charged.

If the customer is also registered for GST and the purchase is for their business, a valid tax invoice usually supports their GST credit claim.

Where Tax Invoices Appear

Tax invoices appear in everyday GST and bookkeeping work, including:

If a business is not registered for GST, the ATO says its invoices should not use the words “tax invoice”. They should be standard invoices instead.

How Tax Invoices Work In Practice

The ATO’s tax invoice guidance explains that if a customer asks for a tax invoice, a GST-registered supplier generally needs to provide one within 28 days, unless the taxable sale is $82.50 including GST or less.

For taxable sales under $1,000, a tax invoice needs enough information to identify details such as the seller, seller’s ABN, issue date, what was sold, the price, and the GST amount or a statement that the total price includes GST. Larger sales need extra buyer details.

Simple Example

A GST-registered electrician completes a $660 repair job, including $60 GST. The customer asks for a tax invoice. The electrician sends an invoice marked “Tax invoice” with their ABN, invoice date, job description, total price, and GST details.

That document helps the electrician report GST on sales and helps a GST-registered business customer keep evidence for a GST credit claim.

Why Tax Invoices Matter

Tax invoices matter because GST depends on evidence. A sale might be real, but if the invoice is missing key GST details, the customer may have trouble claiming a GST credit and the supplier may need to correct the document.

They also reduce confusion between GST-free, input-taxed, mixed, and taxable sales. Clear tax invoices make GST review faster before BAS lodgement.

Easy Way To Remember It

An invoice asks for payment. A tax invoice asks for payment and carries the GST evidence.

In Short

A tax invoice is the GST-ready version of an invoice. For Australian businesses, it helps prove what was sold, how much GST applied, and whether a GST credit can be claimed.
